A lifeline during a very difficult time
Mum Laura* who was recently helped by Children First’s support line shares her story.
“My experience of accessing Children’s First support services has been overwhelmingly positive. I have found the support to be extremely helpful and honestly a lifeline during a very difficult time.
“My son, Sean, is neurodivergent and has a long history of struggling with school, social isolation, sleep challenges and difficulties in his relationship with his father.
“At home I was managing very difficult and often volatile behaviour on my own. Our relationship had broken down and I felt completely overwhelmed and unsure how to cope. When I was first contacted by Children First support line, my main worries were around my son’s wellbeing, our safety at home and my own health and not knowing how to manage his behaviour.
“From the beginning, the support I received made a significant difference. My support line worker, Jenny, immediately understood our situation and provided advice that was practical, relevant and completely tailored to what was actually happening at home. For the first time in many years of seeking help, I felt truly listened to and supported with guidance I could realistically put into practice.
“One of the most helpful aspects was how Jenny broke things down into manageable steps. Instead of feeling overwhelmed, I was able to focus on small, achievable changes such as setting clear boundaries and working on a few strategies at a time. This approach really helped to build my confidence.
“Through this support I have gained a much better understanding of my son’s behaviour and how my own responses can help manage situations more effectively. I have also learned the importance of taking time for myself, which has had a positive impact on both my emotional and physical well-being.
“As a result of the strategies Jenny has helped me with, there have been clear improvements at home. The situation is no longer as volatile; I do not feel the same level of anxieties and my son is beginning to be a bit more respectful and communicating with me. Our relationship has improved and I feel more confident and in control as a parent.
“I genuinely cannot say enough about how much this support has helped. The support has been consistent, thoughtful and effective and has made a lasting difference to both my life and my son’s.”
