Comment on launch of UK Government consultation on under 16s social media ban

Commenting on the UK Government’s consultation on a social media ban for under 16s, Mary Glasgow, Chief Executive of Children First, Scotland’s national children’s charity, said:
"Swift action against tech giants is essential, but it must be robust, thorough and based on a proper review of the evidence of the developmental, social and emotional harms of unregulated exposure on children. Most importantly it must be based on the children and young people's views and experiences, especially those who have been harmed online.
“Whether a social media ban is part of the solution remains to be seen, but it cannot be the only answer. The UK Government must work with the Scottish Government to use all available powers to protect children, learning from the recommendations of Ireland’s online health taskforce.
“Public health campaigns, stronger guidance for parents and teachers, strict regulation of generative AI and investment in opportunities to take part in realistic and engaging alternatives to children's online activities are all vital to keep children safe.”
